Honoring Zona Roberts
Zona Roberts, a legend in the Independent Living movement, passed away this week at the age of 104.
Her son, Ed Roberts, co-founded the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, California. He had contracted polio as a teenager and become a quadriplegic. With her support and example, Ed became a disability activist, ultimately changing the national landscape for disability inclusion and freedom of choice.
Zona’s California home was often a gathering place for the disabled and their allies as they fought for change across all aspects of society. Ed passed away in 1995.
Zona championed accessibility and inclusion her entire life.
