Storm safety tips
Stay safe and be prepared in the event of a storm this winter.
Here are tips for preparing in advance for a storm:
Charge your electronics, especially your cell phone.
Have flashlights ready with extra batteries.
Fill your car with gas.
Tie down or bring inside anything outside that could fly away.
If you take medication, make sure you have at least a week’s worth of prescriptions in case your pharmacy is closed.
Avoid parking under trees if possible.
Take caution during and after a storm:
Do not use a barbecue, generator or propane heater inside your home for heat. You could get carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be deadly.
Be extremely careful if you use candles for light. Make sure they are in an area that is safe for burning. Never leave a lit candle in a room that is unattended.
The Health Department says fresh foods like meat, eggs and dairy products can make you sick if your fridge loses power. It is recommended that you toss those items after four hours. Foods in the freezer may still be OK for 48 hours, if the freezer is full and kept closed.
If you must drive, use extreme caution and avoid areas with fallen trees and downed power lines.
Check on your neighbors, especially older folks and people with disabilities.
If you are in a life-threatening situation, call or text 9-1-1 immediately.
