Join us for a free webinar about accessibility and ableism in the legal system.
In this webinar, we will explore how disability accessibility in the legal system can be improved based on the experiences of our guest speakers. Unfortunately, the disability community has a track record of cases being settled against them. This is because too many lawyers and judges do not know what it is like to have a disability. Often the case is ruled in favor of the party with the ableist argument because the legal system is systemically set up for people with disabilities to not get the accommodations they need to state their side of the story and listen to the other side of the story. However, if lawyers and judges started looking at people with disabilities as experts with lived experience, court cases would have a fairer ruling. Join us to learn about legal system experiences and discuss how to help the disability community express themselves so court cases involving people with disabilities can be interpreted more fairly.
Our panelists are:
- Olivia Ortiz, Northwest Justice Project
- Elicia Tomason, King County resident
- Adrienne Stuart, Washington State Office of the Attorney General
- Alex Strout, Benefits Law Center
