Why We Changed Our Name

The Alliance of People with disAbilities is now, Disability Empowerment Center!

Our new name reflects the critical direct services we provide our community in an empowering setting that emphasizes choice and autonomy for people with disabilities.

Our work hasn’t changed, just our name. We will continue to provide free services to people who reside in King County. We work with people of all ages and backgrounds who have all types of disabilities—including physical, intellectual, sensory and neurological disabilities. Everyone is welcome regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity, race, ethnicity, religion or citizenship status.

Since our funding in the 1970s, we’ve connected with thousands of people with disabilities and advocated for change to create equal rights and opportunities for disabled people.  We’re a unique organization because our staff and volunteers have disabilities, too.
