Disability Pride Month started in 1990 with the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26. That landmark legislation prohibited discrimination against people with disabilities.

The Alliance of People with disAbilities is now, Disability Empowerment Center!

Our new name reflects the critical direct services we provide our community in an empowering setting that emphasizes choice and autonomy for people with disabilities.

In the disability rights movement, an “Independent Living Center” is not referring to residential housing.

An Independent Living Center is a community-based nonprofit organization led and run by people with disabilities to serve other people with disabilities.
